Twitch Audio Too Quiet? Fix Playback, Voice Balance and Silent VODs
Separate quiet Twitch playback from a bad stream mix or muted VOD. Follow viewer checks, understand OBS source controls and use browser gain within its limits.
Quick answer
If all of a Twitch stream is quiet, check the player, browser tab and output device. If the voice is quiet but game audio or alerts are loud, increasing the whole stream also raises those sounds. Only the broadcaster can rebalance the original sources. A booster cannot restore audio missing from a muted VOD.
Identify which sound is wrong before turning everything up. The entire player being quiet is different from a voice buried under game audio. Silence at the same point in a recording is a third problem.
Which Twitch problem are you hearing?
| Observation | Viewer check | Where the lasting fix may belong |
|---|---|---|
| Entire stream is quiet | Player level, tab mute, selected output | Your playback setup or the broadcaster’s overall level |
| Voice is quiet but game sound is loud | Compare the same passage at a comfortable level | The broadcaster’s voice/game balance |
| Alerts overwhelm speech | Lower playback while diagnosing | Alert-source level and dynamics in the broadcast mix |
| A VOD has a silent section | Check whether silence repeats at the same timestamp | Missing or muted recorded audio |
| Every website is quiet | A local recording through the same headphones | Your device or browser output route |
This is a diagnostic checklist, not a ranking of fixes by measured success rate.
How do I check my playback route?
Make sure the player and browser tab are not muted, then check the connected output and its level. Compare a different stream and a familiar local recording through the same headphones. Keep the device fixed during the comparison.
If only one channel is quiet, report the observation to the broadcaster. If every source is quiet, use the laptop-volume checklist. If there is no audio at all, a volume booster is not the first diagnostic tool.
Why does boosting a quiet voice also make alerts louder?
When voice, game and alerts arrive as one mixed signal, a single gain control affects that mix. It does not know which part you wanted to hear. For a simple illustrative calculation, take a quiet voice component at amplitude 0.05 and an alert at 0.25: multiplying both by two gives 0.10 and 0.50. The ratio remains five to one. These are invented signal values, not measurements of a Twitch stream or perceived loudness.
EQ and compression can change the mix’s balance or dynamics, but they do not provide the broadcaster’s original isolated sources. Try the speech-and-chime listening example on this page. It compares the same source with gain alone and with compression plus gain. Speech and chime occur in sequence; it does not demonstrate extracting a voice from simultaneous game audio.
How can I compare settings without fooling myself?
- Choose a replayable VOD passage containing both speech and a louder moment. Note its timestamp. Live content changes, so two different moments are a weaker comparison.
- Keep the player level, device volume and output device fixed. Listen with enhancement off first.
- Change one control. For an entirely quiet stream, start with a small gain increase. Replay the same passage, then turn enhancement off to compare.
- Check the louder moment as well as the quiet sentence. Keep the change only if the result helps without adding harshness, distracting noise or pumping.
If enabling Hearably causes silence, dropouts or sync trouble, turn it off for that tab and reload the page. Confirm native playback before trying again. Twitch’s browser guidance also recommends checking browser updates and testing without extensions when playback fails. A paid plan cannot remove a capture restriction.
What can the broadcaster change in OBS?
OBS exposes source faders, meters and mute controls in its Audio Mixer. Where microphone, game and alert audio have separate sources, adjust those sources before judging the combined output.
A useful rehearsal is a short local recording with normal speech, louder game action and one example alert. Listen back through the intended monitoring device. Change one source at a time; the viewer’s volume slider cannot repair the relative balance after it has been mixed.
OBS’s compressor documentation explains both peak reduction and sidechain ducking, where one source triggers a reduction in another. Settings need a listening test with the broadcaster’s own material. Do not copy one threshold and assume it fits every microphone or stream.
Why is part of a Twitch VOD silent?
Twitch documents automatic muting of VOD sections when its system detects copyrighted audio. Its muted-audio guidance explains the creator’s review path. Not every silence has that cause, so first check whether the same section is silent on another output or client.
A browser booster cannot recover a signal absent from the delivered recording. It is not a way around a muted segment, and paying for more gain does not change that.
When is Hearably useful for Twitch?
Hearably adjusts the output of a supported desktop Chrome or Edge tab. Use the Twitch browser-volume guide when the full stream is audible but too quiet. Free offers up to 120% gain and a three-band EQ; Pro offers up to 800% and a ten-band EQ with additional dynamics controls.
Start with modest gain and compare before and after. Stop increasing it if the result becomes harsh or distorted. Capture must work on the actual page. A paid plan does not remove capture restrictions or control the Twitch mobile, TV or console app.
Hearably’s Ad Guard responds to changes in signal level; it does not recognize ad content or isolate an alert from a mixed stream. For several streams, separate supported tabs can have separate playback settings, but sources already mixed inside one tab remain mixed.
What should I include in a useful problem report?
Note whether the issue affects live playback, a clip or a VOD, along with the client and output device. Include a timestamp for a recorded example and state whether only the voice, only the alerts or the entire mix is affected. That gives the creator or support team something specific to compare.
What changes quiet speech and loud effects?
Compare our short original script followed by a generated chime. Start at a low device volume and keep it fixed across all three examples. Each file lasts about five seconds and plays only when you press play.
Spoken transcript: “This is the quiet sentence. A louder chime comes next.” [A chime follows.]
1. Original: quiet speech, louder chime
Listen for the level change after the spoken sentence.
2. Everything raised by 6 dB
Both speech and chime get louder. Their level gap stays the same.
3. Compression plus 6 dB
Speech has the same level as example 2. The following chime is reduced.
In the compressed example, the measured gap between the speech segment and chime drops by 7.4 dB. Speech receives the same gain as in example 2. This is not a measurement of intelligibility.
This is a controlled example with synthetic voices, not a recording from a streaming service or a test of Hearably’s Night Mode. Speech and chime occur in sequence: it does not show voice separation from simultaneous music. Overall levels are deliberately not matched.
Measurements, method and source files
RMS levels from the finished WAV files: the speech window includes its pauses; the chime lasts 0.8 seconds. “Gap” is the difference between those two levels. RMS is not LUFS and does not describe your speakers’ sound pressure level.
| File | Speech | Chime | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV 1 | -45.2 | -20.1 | 25.0 dB |
| WAV 2 | -39.2 | -14.1 | 25.0 dB |
| WAV 3 | -39.2 | -21.5 | 17.7 dB |
The simple full-band compressor uses a −25 dBFS threshold, 4:1 ratio, instant attack and 150 ms release, followed by +6 dB. No extra normalization, EQ or limiter. Reproduce the processing from the fixed speech files using Node.js.
The English voice was generated with Piper’s LJ Speech model; the German voice uses Thorsten Voice. Their model cards list public domain and CC0 speech datasets respectively. Text, model sources, checksums and settings are documented; no endorsement by the original speakers is implied.

Reviewed October 5, 2026 against Twitch and OBS guidance. The controlled listening example uses original synthetic speech and a generated chime. It is not captured Twitch audio, a compatibility test or a test of Hearably's Night Mode. Diagnostic steps are suggested comparisons, not measured success rates. Hearably makes the extension discussed here.
