Google Meet too quiet? Check playback before boosting
Check speakers and microphone direction first. Then compare a small boost on supported Meet tab audio in Chrome or Edge.
Chrome & Edge · Local audio processing
If everyone in Google Meet sounds quiet, start with the selected speaker and its playback level. If other people say you are quiet, check your microphone instead. A volume booster changes what you hear; it does not make your outgoing voice louder.
Which part of Google Meet audio needs fixing?
| What you hear | First check | Where Hearably fits |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone is audible but quiet | Meet’s speaker selection, device volume and browser sound. | Compare a small gain increase if the incoming tab audio is supported. |
| No meeting sound in Companion mode | Leave Companion mode and rejoin with meeting audio when appropriate. | Gain cannot enable a speaker that the mode does not use. |
| Only one participant is quiet | Ask them to check microphone selection, distance and input level. | The tab contains the combined received audio; boosting also raises other voices. |
| Others cannot hear you clearly | Your microphone selection, permissions and input setup. | Hearably does not process your outgoing microphone. |
| A presentation is silent | Whether the presenter shared audio with the content. | Audio that never reaches the tab cannot be recovered. |
| Echo, missing words or dropouts | Headphones, duplicate audio connections and connection quality. | More gain can make echo louder; it cannot restore missing speech. |
Test Google Meet’s speaker output first
Before joining, open the speaker selector in the preview, or use More options → Settings → Audio. Choose the intended output and select Test speakers. During a call, the arrow beside the microphone also opens device options. These are Google’s documented audio checks; menu placement can change.
If the test plays through a monitor instead of your headphones, correct the output before adding gain. If the test is clear but one voice is faint, investigate that speaker’s input. Google’s audio troubleshooting also explains why Companion mode does not provide microphone or speaker audio.
What is free, and what does Pro add?
Hearably Free includes up to 120% gain and a 3-band EQ, without an account. Pro adds up to 800%, a 10-band EQ, Voice Boost and Night Mode; see the plan comparison. These controls apply to supported incoming tab audio, not separate participants. Payment does not remove capture restrictions.
Compare the same voice before an important meeting
- Arrange a short test with a willing colleague. Keep the same headset, speaker and device volume; no recording is needed.
- Open Meet in a regular desktop Chrome or Edge tab. Start Hearably there and confirm that sound continues with flat EQ at 100%.
- Ask for the same phrase again and compare a small increase up to Free’s 120%. Also check an ordinary louder voice before keeping the setting.
- Return to the original setting, then try one small EQ change only if needed. Compare clarity as well as loudness.
If sound disappears, crackles or loses sync: turn enhancement off first. If necessary, reload the tab or rejoin when you can do so without disrupting the call. Keep enhancement off if ordinary playback works and processing does not. Follow the full Meet audio-settings guide for microphone and connection checks.

What a Meet volume booster can actually change
Hearably adjusts the audio delivered through a supported browser tab. EQ changes its frequency balance; gain changes its level. Neither reconstructs consonants removed before delivery, separates participants, repairs clipping in someone’s microphone or replaces Meet’s input processing.
Google documents noise cancellation and Studio sound availability by account and device. Those features concern meeting audio processing; they are not a reason to promise a fixed gain setting for every call. Investigate a speaker’s input when only their voice is affected.
Google also offers an installable Meet progressive web app. A separate Meet window does not by itself prove that an extension can capture its audio. Use a regular browser tab for the comparison above and verify the actual route. Hearably does not control phone apps.
Evidence: manufacturer guidance reviewed on October 6, 2026. The comparison is an editorial diagnostic procedure, not a hands-on Meet compatibility or latency measurement. Hearably publishes this guide and makes the extension.
Checks for the way you use Meet
Headphones or a new dock
Recheck the chosen speaker after connecting a headset, Bluetooth device or monitor. A working test tone helps distinguish routing from quiet conversation.
One quiet colleague
Ask them to check their input before increasing the whole call. A setting chosen for one faint voice can make everyone else too loud.
Shared music or a video
Ask the presenter to verify that audio is being shared and is audible at their source. Your playback gain cannot create an absent audio track.
A managed work computer
Check extension policy with your administrator and pilot the actual browser, headset and meeting setup before a wider rollout.
A call that already works
Keep a working setup for the current meeting. Compare new processing in a short test session, with a clear way to turn it off.
Built for this exact use case
Free: up to 120% gain
Try a modest level adjustment on supported incoming tab audio before considering an upgrade.
Free 3-band EQ
Compare small tonal changes while keeping your output device and volume fixed.
Additional Pro controls
Pro adds 10-band EQ, Voice Boost, Night Mode and gain settings up to 800%.
Compare with the original
Switch processing off to check whether an adjustment really makes the same voice easier to follow.
Test tab audio in three steps
Install
Add Hearably from the Chrome Web Store or Microsoft Edge Add-ons.
Check playback
Open Hearably on the playing tab and start processing. Confirm that audio still plays before changing settings.
Compare
Try a small volume or EQ adjustment. Stop processing and reload the tab if playback is disrupted.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make Google Meet louder?
Check Meet’s speaker selection, Test speakers and your device volume first. If supported incoming tab audio remains quiet, compare Hearably Free at 100% and up to 120% with flat EQ.
Is the Google Meet volume booster free?
Hearably Free includes up to 120% gain and a 3-band EQ without an account. Pro adds up to 800%, 10-band EQ, Voice Boost and Night Mode. Test your actual tab with Free before upgrading.
Will it make my microphone louder for other people?
No. Hearably processes supported incoming tab audio, not your microphone. Check the selected microphone, permissions and input setup when other people cannot hear you.
Can I boost one Google Meet participant separately?
Hearably receives combined tab audio. It does not provide a separate track or volume control for each participant. Start with the quiet speaker’s microphone setup.
Why is there no sound in Companion mode?
Google documents that microphone and speaker audio are unavailable in Companion mode. Rejoin with the meeting’s normal audio mode when you need to hear it on that device.
Does Hearably work in an installed Meet app?
Google offers an installable Meet PWA, but capture support must be checked on the actual browser route. This guide uses a regular Chrome or Edge tab. Hearably does not control Meet phone apps.
Can it restore speech removed by noise cancellation?
No. Gain and EQ can change the audio received by the tab, but cannot reconstruct words or frequencies already removed upstream.
What if enabling Hearably stops the sound?
Turn enhancement off first. If needed, reload the tab or rejoin at a suitable point. Keep processing off if normal playback works but enhancement does not; a paid plan does not remove capture restrictions.
